Hello friends! My week has been filled with climbing and horses! Yesterday, I joined the barn assistant for morning chores, as he had to attend his daughter's soccer game and needed to leave early. I was happy to do so, as it meant more time with my favorite animals. My heart absolutely melted when I headed out to catch horses in the paddock and found my favorite horse, Stevie, nickering softly when she heard my voice!

This week's newsletter is going to be highly focused on What Is Cannot Be Unwritten, as the review campaign opens up for subscribers TODAY. If you're wondering what the title of the book means, here's the poem that inspired it all.

What Is Cannot Be Unwritten
What is cannot be unwritten, quills now shattered dust. Poesy alone can pen the lines that tell of our new fate.
A land untouched by catastrophe promised always ours. Yet always prowl the conquerors behind the long stone veil.
Grind my blood, mix with ashes: make me into ink. Offer these alms to our goddess for her ammunition.
My eternal prayer for retribution must forever be fulfilled.

Writing Tip of the Week
In most cases, your reader already knows that the MC will not die. It's extremely rare for an author to kill an MC on-screen as, well, that means the story's over and there won't be a sequel.
As such, stories that primarily focus on physical danger for the MC ("omg! They could die!") paradoxically do not feel as high-stakes. You're essentially taunting the reader with an outcome they know is almost certain not to happen.
While you can definitely include a sense of physical danger and potential death, the real stakes typically come from other perils that are more realistic in the narrative. This could be the death of someone other than the MC, physical disability, or emotional damage. Stakes could also include destroyed cities, ruptured relationships, broken trust, or governmental collapse.

About the Eirenic Verses
The review campaign for What Is Cannot Be Unwritten is officially open for my subscribers! You can join the review campaign over on Booksprout, where you will claim your complimentary copy and submit your review on Goodreads by the date.
Please note that while the book will be available on other platforms, including Amazon, those will not be open to the public until October 31st. Preorders count toward a book's popularity rating, and the Amazon algorithm gives an extra boost during the first month, so a long preorder period can reduce my ratings.
Check back after you have completed your review so that you can add it on other platforms! And thank you so much for supporting my work.

What I'm Reading This Week
If you're expecting a book about death and grief to be a dull, somber slog, then you'll be pleasantly surprised by Happy Death Club. Part memoir, part cultural analysis, Westerman's prose is voicey and casual; it brings death out of the dour funeral home and into our lives, where it rightfully belongs.
What I really loved about Happy Death Club is its seamless weaving of disparate themes: even using Taylor Swift's discography to reflect the democratization of funeral practices. Carefully researched yet wonderfully accessible, this work will revolutionize your understanding of something we will all someday face.

“But maybe a good death means a good life. A life not full of unfulfilled dreams, or plans for the future that will never be realised.”
